146th Preakness Stakes Preview

Saturday 15th May sees the 146th running of The Preakness Stakes. It is the second leg of the American Triple Crown, after Medina Spirit won The Kentucky Derby a fortnight ago. The lead up to the race has been shrouded in controversy after Medina Spirit produced a positive drug test. Trainer Bob Baffert has denied any wrong doing but all eyes will be on Medina Spirit to see how he performs.

Our racebook is now open, take a look at some of the runners and riders for the big race below.

Medina Spirit will likely go off the favourite for the race after his exploits in his surprise Kentucky Derby victory. Questions will be asked as to how much that race would have taken out of him as he was gamely hanging on at the end. Likely to go off at around 2/1, many will find that price far too skinny and will be looking elsewhere.

A potential alternative to Medina Spirit at a slightly bigger price could be Medina Spirit’s stable mate Concert Tour, currently priced at 5/2.

Concert Tour was all set for The Kentucky Derby but skipped the race after a disappointing 3rd place finish in his warm up race, where he didn’t seem to want the distance. With experienced jock Mike Smith taking the reins, look for Concert Tour to make the running, whether he can maintain that lead is the question he needs to answer.

For those looking at slightly bigger prices, one potential answer could be Midnight Bourbon currently priced around 5/1. A fancy for The Kentucky Derby, his chance was blown after a tardy start. Racing further back and wider than he would have liked, he stayed on well for a battling 6th.

The hope is that with a smaller field and less traffic to contend with, Midnight Bourbon will sit off the pace and use his finishing speed to claim a historic victory. Irad Ortiz is the man on board.

The final horse we are spotlighting is Unbridled Honor who currently is priced at 15/1 for the dominating duo of Todd Pletcher and Luis Saez. Not having the form of others, to call him the winner would be a stretch. However, he is a horse that looks to be improving all the time. He won’t be on your screens for the first half of the race, but keep your eye out at the finish as he will be finishing fast.
